Newmarket Story Project
In 2027, Newmarket will celebrate its 300th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, a group of dedicated local volunteers completed a special project that will be featured as part of the festivities. The project centered on conducting interviews with long-time Newmarket residents, capturing their stories about life in the town from the 1930s to the 1980s. In August 2022, Karen Schuster of Eagle-Eye-Editing and the Newmarket Business Association invited members from various organizations to collaborate on this endeavor. The team included John Carmichael, Kris Carmichael, and Michael Provost from the New Market Historical Society; Patti Blanchette, a lawyer and former State Representative who grew up in Newmarket; and Tim Cremmen, the town’s Media Services Manager.
United by their belief that Newmarket is a truly special place, the group set out to answer, “What makes Newmarket uniquely Newmarket?” They conducted in-person interviews with 35 townspeople, known as Narrators, most of whom were also videotaped by Cremmen.
Stories from these interviews, along with a range of photographs from the Narrators and the Historical Society, were compiled and published in the book Newmarket Stories: From the 1930s to the 1980s. The book illustrates how both the town and its people have changed over time. Highlights from some of the videotaped interviews are being shared on social media and Newmarket’s Channel 8 to engage residents and neighboring communities ahead of the anniversary. Additionally, Tim’s documentary chronicling Newmarket during these five decades will be screened at multiple venues, beginning with a Book Launch at the Newmarket Town Hall on March 26, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
